Hypnosis Q & A

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a therapeutic practice that helps you enter a state of deep relaxation and intense focus quickly and purposefully. When you are in this trancelike state, you are open to suggestions. Dr. Anbar and the team at Center Point Medicine repeat phrases and use imagery to embed agreed-upon healthy thoughts and ideas in your mind.

When you are in hypnosis, you are in complete control of yourself. While you are more open to suggestions, you won’t do anything that you wouldn’t usually do. Also, for hypnosis to be successful, you need to want to experience a state of hypnosis.

Hypnosis can be used with people as young as 4 years of age.

What happens during a hypnosis session?

During your first appointment, you and your provider will spend time getting to know each other. Building rapport helps you feel comfortable with your provider and allows you to share what you want to work on through hypnosis. Your provider will explain how hypnosis works and answer any of your questions about the process.

Once you’re ready to move forward with hypnosis, your provider will teach you the techniques to quiet your mind and enter a trancelike state. This may involve deep-breathing exercises, repeated phrases, and guided imagery.

Once you’re in a fully relaxed hypnotic state, your provider continues to talk to you in relaxing tones, sharing positive ideas and thoughts related to the areas of your life and wellness you want to improve.

Your provider also teaches you techniques so you can relax and enter a trance-like state on your own at any time of your choosing. This practice helps you reinforce the healthier thoughts and behaviors outside of your in-office sessions.

In advanced hypnosis sessions, you can learn to gain insight regarding your thoughts and feelings by communicating with your inner mind or subconscious.

What are the benefits of hypnosis?

Hypnosis can help you improve how your mind works, giving you the tools and practices you need to cope with mental and physical health issues. During your treatment, you develop better insight and more positive and confident feelings.

For example, if you live with anxiety, you can use hypnosis to help yourself relax and let go of the intense worries that can negatively impact your life. Hypnosis may also help you improve your performance at work or school by reinforcing positive behaviors and choices.
