Abdominal Pain Q & A

What causes abdominal pain?

There are many potential causes of abdominal pain, but digestive disorders are by far the most common. Issues like IBS, acid reflux, infections, gastritis, food intolerances, and even gas can trigger severe abdominal discomfort.

Reproductive health issues such as menstrual cramps, endometriosis, and fibroids can also cause significant abdominal pain. You might also experience abdominal pain because of a urinary tract infection.

How is abdominal pain treated?

In order to treat abdominal pain, your primary care provider or gastroenterologist needs to diagnose the condition causing your symptoms. They perform a physical exam and run a barrage of tests to check for signs that indicate a specific condition. With so many potential causes of abdominal pain, it can take time to identify the true root cause of your abdominal pain and other symptoms. It’s common for anxiety and depression to develop as a result of chronic abdominal pain and the adverse effect it can have on your life.

However, once your provider has an accurate diagnosis, they can create and implement a treatment plan to relieve your pain and heal your body. Treatment typically includes a combination of lifestyle changes and medications. In some severe cases, surgery may be needed to address the problem.

At Center Point Medicine, Dr. Anbar and the team include hypnosis in your treatment plan for abdominal pain. In fact, you can begin hypnotherapy before your diagnosis is complete.

How does hypnosis reduce abdominal pain?

When Dr. Anbar or one of the other compassionate providers at Center Point Medicine helps you use hypnosis, you enter a state of deep relaxation and focus. This state opens the communication between your conscious and subconscious mind, thus making you open to suggestions.

For example, if you’re in hypnosis while you have abdominal pain, your provider can suggest that what your brain has been interpreting as a searing and debilitating pain can be felt as a mild annoyance that can be overlooked easily. Hypnosis can also help you maintain a positive and calm outlook on life, despite your condition.

In addition to using hypnosis to provide immediate pain relief, your provider also teaches you how to practice self-hypnosis so you can learn to manage your pain at home as well. Hypnosis is natural and drug-free and has been shown in several research studies to be an effective form of pain relief.
